Vietnam willing to discuss with US amid potential 25% tariffs on imported steel, aluminum
February 14, 2025 | 09:35 am GMT+7
Vietnam is willing to discuss with the U.S. to resolve commercial issues as the country is ready to impose a 25% tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, the foreign ministry said Thursday.
"Vietnam stands ready to engage in discussions with the U.S. in a constructive and cooperative manner to share information, bolster understanding and resolving outstanding issues, thereby further strengthening our bilateral economic ties in an enduring and stable manner, fulfilling the interests of both sides," spokeswoman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang said at a regular press meet.
Hang was responding to inquiries about Vietnam's reaction to the possibility of the U.S. imposing a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum products imported into the country.
Vietnam is closely cooperating with the U.S. to maintain the momentum of bilateral commercial development on the basis of the two countries’ comprehensive strategic partnership, Hang said, adding that Vietnam "shares the concerns" of businesses amid a changing global economic situation. The government always follows the situation to deploy appropriate measures and reduce impacts to the economy, while contributing to global commercial development.
Vietnam, along with Canada, Mexico, Brazil and South Korea are among the countries set to be affected by Donald Trump’s decision to hike tariffs on all aluminum and steel imports starting March 4. Trump said the decision would encourage businesses to move to the U.S. for operation.
Vietnam’s aluminum and steel products entering the U.S. are being imposed tariffs at 10% and 25%, respectively. After Trump’s decision goes into effect, tariffs for Vietnam’s aluminum products would increase by 15 percentage points.
